5. Blurring Realities

The boundaries between physical and digital realities are disappearing, blurring the line between real and artificial.

Societal trust in each other and what’s true is eroding. The spread of deepfakes, AI-generated content, and politicized narratives fuels uncertainty over who controls information and what can be believed. Ethical dilemmas follow—from privacy concerns to the psychological effects of living in a world where perception is constantly shifting.

We overestimate technology’s short-term impact and underestimate its long-term transformation—and reality-bending tech proves it. Augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and AI are moving beyond hype, quietly reshaping how we work, socialize, and perceive truth. Hybrid work, immersive entertainment, and digital identities are fracturing reality, creating overlapping versions of what’s real.

  • The 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer hit a 23-year low global trust index score of 59.

With trust in governments (50%), businesses (59%), and NGOs (54%) all declining. The World Happiness Survey (2023) confirms this, showing sharp regional divides, with trust higher in Nordic countries but plummeting in Eastern Europe and Latin America. The erosion of trust is a global phenomenon.

  • The hype around the metaverse may have faded, but the fusion of digital and physical worlds is quietly reshaping daily life.

AR, VR, and spatial computing are slowly moving from novelty to more mainstream, integrating into how we work, learn, interact and entertain ourselves. From AR-enhanced design and training simulations to VR-driven therapy and remote collaboration, technology is embedding itself into the spaces we move through.

  • Private Sector: Misinformation as a Business Risk

In a fractured information landscape, companies operate in a world where truth is contested, narratives can be hijacked, and perception can be manipulated. Managing misinformation risks is now an imperative.

    Public Sector: Defending Information Ecosystems

Access to reliable information is under threat. Public actors should look to support independent journalism, build in transparency in digital media, and equip citizens with stronger media literacy to restore trust in facts.
