Oceania Futures and Foresight Symposium 2027
📍 Meanjin (Brisbane), Australia
📅 18–19 March 2027
The Oceania Futures and Foresight Symposium returns to Meanjin for its third edition, bringing together futurists, foresight practitioners, researchers, designers, cultural leaders, young people and others interested in shaping positive futures across the Oceania region.
The 2027 theme is “Weaving Tomorrow: Youth Agency, Intergenerational Reciprocity & Embodied Cultural Futures Across Oceania.” Building on the previous two editions, the symposium is conceived as a community-led gathering rather than a predetermined conference: participants help shape its conversations, methods and agenda.
2027 Focus
The symposium explores futures and foresight as practices that are relational, intergenerational and culturally grounded. Particular attention will be given to:
Youth agency – recognising young people as active shapers of current transitions rather than simply inheritors of the future
Intergenerational reciprocity – connecting the accumulated wisdom of elders with the imagination and agency of younger generations
Embodied cultural futures – expanding foresight beyond intellectual analysis through sensory, relational, land-based and ocean-based practices
Community-led foresight – drawing on lived experience, cultural knowledge and practitioner expertise from across Oceania
Experimentation – creating space to test methods, challenge assumptions and co-design new futures pathways
An Experiential Gathering
The programme is being co-created with the community and will include practical and experiential approaches to futures. Contributions may take the form of case studies, intergenerational dialogues, emerging foresight methods, youth-led innovation, storytelling, movement, sensory inquiry, performance, ritual and other creative provocations.
Call for Contributions
The symposium is currently inviting expressions of interest from people across the futures and foresight community who would like to contribute to the programme. Speaker EOIs close 6 November 2026.
Venue
The symposium takes place at Souths Leagues Club in West End, Meanjin (Brisbane), with two full days of programming and a networking gathering on the evening of 18 March.
